Information Governance Organizational Development
Develop an organizational framework to support and sustain your records program.
How we help
An organizational framework supports and sustains an information governance program, turning it from a concept into an operational reality that can function independently.
We help you develop the management structure and processes for ongoing operation of your information governance program well after Contoural has completed its engagement.
If you’ve been asking yourself…
“How do we ensure that, once developed, the program will continue to operate? Who will be responsible for training, audit and program updates?”
“What workstreams are common across records management, document retention, privacy, and eDiscovery, and how do we leverage these?”
How are we going to make program decisions? What’s an appropriate charter for the steering committee, what is its role, and who should be on it?
“How do we train and provide support at the business level?”
“What are the overall program staffing requirements? What and how many resources are appropriate for an organization our size?”
“What’s the ideal information governance organizational structure for us to execute our program effectively? How should departments and business units be involved? What model best fits into our business across all business units and geographies?”
“What are the initial tasks plans for managers? How do we train and what are the tasks for the coordinators?”
…you’ve come to the right place.

What We Do
Our information governance organizational development services
The success of an information governance program requires leadership and commitment at all levels. We assist in the creation, development, or refining of an organizational framework, structure, and processes to ensure the program’s efficacy and longevity.
Organizational Development
We help you define governance structures and accountability, clarify responsibilities and resource requirements, and develop a concrete task plan
To ensure the information governance program is set up for success, management structures and processes must be clearly articulated and understood. We work with you to put in place the framework, structure, and processes necessary to support the smooth functioning of the program, including:
- Establishing ownership of the information governance program as well as records management and document retention in particular, and how program responsibility is centralized or located within each business unit.
- Defining program roles and governance structure.
- Determining program staffing and resource requirements.
- Identifying and leveraging common workstreams across records management, document retention, privacy, and eDiscovery.
- Assigning responsibility for training, audit, and program updates.
- Planning for initial training and rollout.
Project components include:
Steering Committee and Charter
We develop a charter for a cross-functional Information Governance Steering Committee composed of key stakeholders, where each stakeholder remains responsible for an area of expertise and tasks are accomplished through an integrated and coordinated plan. The charter documents the purpose, structure, and roles and responsibilities of the committee.
Organizational Framework and Matrix
In addition to an approach for deployment and implementation, the framework includes a preliminary organizational structure, reached through consensus among key stakeholders, and a matrix of the distribution of information governance roles across the enterprise. Roles include the program manager, information governance executive and steering committees, information governance compliance leads, records coordinators, privacy coordinators, and other potential contributors. The matrix details the distribution of roles and resources organized by business units, functions, and/or locations.
Roles and Responsibilities
Formal responsibilities and resource requirements are developed for information governance program roles, including criteria, process, and guidelines for selecting record coordinators.
Program Manager and Records Coordinators 90-day Task Plan
A 90-day task plan for the program manager and records coordinators contains a detailed set of activities to complete in the first three months of program rollout.
Executive Communications
We develop and deliver a presentation on the proposed framework to provide executives with a strategic vision and establish a foundation for the implementation of the information governance program.
