The Muddle of AI Governance

How we help

AI promises tremendous leaps in productivity, revenue, cost savings, and innovation. But while organizations are racing to adopt generative AI, most lack the governance structures to deploy it safely and effectively.

We work with organizations to assess, establish, and implement policies and procedures for compliant, transparent, and ethical use of AI in order to safeguard employee and company data, ensure compliance with new and changing regulatory requirements, and identify high-quality data for AI use.

What We Do

Our AI readiness services

Rather than slowing down progress, a well-designed AI Governance program drives faster and more effective application development and deployment. Ensuring that concerns and risks are addressed early on avoids the need to redesign or rework systems on the tail end.

We help organizations assess, establish, and implement policies and procedures for compliant, transparent, and ethical use of AI to safeguard employee and company data, ensure compliance with new and changing regulatory requirements, and identify high-quality data for AI use.

AI Readiness Assessment and Strategic Roadmap

We conduct a structured assessment of the organization’s current AI posture and develop a practical, right-sized roadmap toward AI governance maturity.

The assessment identifies strengths, weaknesses, and gaps across governance, policy, data controls, and oversight based on the organization’s profile and current policies and protocols.

Key to our approach is involving key stakeholders in the process to raise concerns and provide input as well as develop a level of comfort with the chosen approaches. Assessing and socializing needs early with a larger group of stakeholders ultimately speeds up program development and reduces the risk of having to redesign or rework the system later.

From this assessment, we develop a practical, right-sized roadmap toward AI governance maturity. The strategic roadmap identifies gaps between the current state and the desired level of AI governance maturity and puts in place a plan to achieve target maturity in each of the main areas addressed.

    AI Governance Policy

We develop an AI governance policy that defines compliant, transparent, and ethical use of AI across the organization.

    The AI governance policy:

    • ensures enterprise-wide alignment with privacy policies, records retention, data security classification policies, and information security controls,
    • establishes an AI governance steering committee, composed of key cross-functional stakeholders, which defines clear roles and responsibilities across the AI lifecycle, and
    • develops data quality assessment and remediation processes, information security safeguards, and risk assessment procedures for AI use cases.

The AI governance policy serves as the guiding framework and demonstrates to regulators, customers, and leadership that AI is being deployed responsibly.

    Fractional Staffing

We offer hands-on guidance to operationalize controls, review AI deployments, train stakeholders, and embed governance into day-to-day processes.

By embedding a fractional professional who has direct access to Contoural’s full delivery organization, your organization has a single, consistent point of contact backed by deep, on-demand expertise across AI governance, legal research, retention scheduling, information governance, defensible disposition, privacy, and technology implementation.

Fractional information governance services provide hands-on support for day-to-day AI governance operational tasks, documentation, and follow-through, including tracking action items, maintaining records inventories or logs, coordinating with IT or vendors, ensuring commitments are completed, and updating standard operating procedures (SOPs) and other lightweight documentation. The emphasis is on reliability and execution, closing the gap between policy and practice.

Fractional information governance and AI governance services are delivered under a flexible engagement model tailored to the organization’s needs. This can include full-time support over a period of months or fractional support of 50% or 25% for a longer period.

This approach allows organizations to access experienced information governance expertise without the cost or rigidity of a full-time role, while still maintaining continuity, accountability, and institutional knowledge. Sustain effective information governance and records management programs, reduce risk, and support legal and regulatory obligations in a cost-effective and scalable manner.
